With the expansion of online gambling in the early 21st century, the Netherlands took the lead in fighting the spread of online gambling into their country. The Dutch have used their online gambling laws to put restrictions on the sports gambling industry, too. The History of the Netherlands
The Low Countries were a mixture of smaller lordships and diocese throughout the Middle Ages. By the time of the Renaissance, the Low Countries (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxumbourg) were under the control of either the Duke of Burgundy or the Holy Roman (German) Emperorer. Charles V, future Habsburg ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, inherited the Duchy of Burgundy through his father in 1506 (at the age of six), bringing all of the Low Countries under Habsburg rule.
The French insisted that Charles V pay homage to the king of France for Burgundy, but eventually relinquished this claim. Charles inherited Spain from his grandfather in 1516, bring a huge area of Europe under one ruler. This posed a mortal danger to the French crown, which became the chief enemy of the Habsburgs for the next 150 years.
The Netherlands was a large part of the struggle between the French and the Habsburgs.
Charles V gave local autonomy to the Low Countries in 1548, but his successor, Philip II of Spain, a devoted Catholic, was concerned by the growing Protestantism in the Low Countries. His attempts to reassert control of the Netherlands and Belgium led to the Eighty Years War, which only ended with the end of the much larger Thirty Years War, which finally spelled an end to the supposed Habsburg attempts to dominate Europe. The Netherlands were left free of German control, though Belgium fell increasingly under French influence.
Holland experienced a brief Golden Age in the generation after 1648, when its ships traded around the globe and the Netherlands were considered a major mercantile power. Dutch artists like Rembrandt and Jan Vermeer were active in this time.
This Golden Age came to an end in 1672, when the English and French kingdoms led a coalition of states which declared war on Holland. This had followed years of conflict with the English, and the conflict was a falling out of the many former enemies of the Habsburgs. The English defeated the Netherlands in this war, taking most of their overseas colonies, including the New Amsterdam colony that became New York City.
For the past few centuries, Holland has existed as an independent nation, often balancing its policies between its three large neighbors: France, England and later a unified Germany. The Netherlands remained neutral in World War I, mainly because the Germans thought a neutral Holland would allow them to evade the British blockade and trade with the outside world.
The Dutch were not so lucky in World War II, as their nation was overrun by the Nazi war machine in 1940. After the war, the Dutch became a major part of the Western European and international community. The world court is located in the Hague. The Netherlands has joined with Belgium and Luxembourg in a joint economic venture, and they are collectively sometimes referred to as Benelux.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie made that dream an official reality earlier this month when he signed a bill that allows lottery tickets to be delivered via private courier. The new legislation is meant to “broaden the lottery’s customer base,” the Associated Press reported.
The bill makes New Jersey the first state in the country to allow private couriers to deliver lottery tickets.
New Jersey, of course, already allows people in the state to gamble at home via NJ gambling websites.
Tropicana, Golden Nugget and Caesars are among the casinos offering online gambling.
Couriers will only deliver lottery tickets
The state’s AssemblyDemocrats were quick to publish the bill’s success, noting that Assemblyman John Burzichelli was the bill’s sponsor.
The law requires the State Lottery Commission to register and authorize courier services. Their sole responsibility will be to deliver the tickets. These ticket-exclusive couriers will, by law, have no competition. It would be a criminal penalty to start a lottery courier service not registered and authorized by the lottery commission.
Couriers could also cash winning tickets
Under the law, couriers will also be able to “redeem winning tickets on behalf of customers.”
That provision comes with the caveat that couriers must take “proper steps” to ensure customers’ winnings are secure, and that the whole process is transparent.
Regardless of whether they cash out winners, all couriers will undergo random audits by the commission.

Lawmakers say legislation helps the homebound
The new lottery law will help New Jersey residents who may not have the freedom or physical ability to drive to the local grocery store to buy tickets. Burzichelli pointed out that residents who are homebound have many other goods delivered to their homes, including food, water and clothing.
“This bill is aimed at saving players’ time and broadening a customer base that provides revenue for services that benefit all New Jersey residents,” Burzichelli said.

Interestingly enough, Christie rejected a lottery courier bill in 2015. At the time, he said that he didn’t think there was enough demand for this kind of service.
At the time, he told NJ.com he thought the bill would empower “fraudsters.” He also they would provide a means for them to “target the elderly and infirm.”
